Narrow roads, local traffic rules, and the best routes to the island's most scenic spots — everything every visitor should know before hitting the road in Mykonos.
Driving Tips in Mykonos
Driving in Mykonos is straightforward once you know the basics, but the island has its quirks. Here's everything you need to know to drive safely, avoid fines, and discover the best routes.
Road Conditions
The main ring road around the south coast is well-paved and in good condition. Secondary roads to popular beaches (Paradise, Elia, Kalafatis) are also paved but narrow in places. The northern half of the island has more unpaved tracks, particularly the roads to Fokos Beach and Merchia.
Key things to watch for:
Speed Limits
Police speed checks are common on the airport road and the stretch between Mykonos Town and Ornos. Fines start at €100 for minor speeding.
Parking in Mykonos
Parking is the single biggest challenge for drivers in Mykonos, especially in July and August.
Mykonos Town (Chora): The old town is pedestrian-only. Park in the designated lots on the outskirts — the Fabrika area and the lot near the new port road are your best options. Arrive before 10am in peak season or you'll be circling for 30+ minutes.
Beaches: Most popular beaches have free (unpaved) car parks, but they fill up fast. Paradise, Super Paradise, and Elia all have dedicated parking areas.
Naoussa, Ano Mera: Small lots available near the main squares. Less competitive than Mykonos Town.
Tips:
Best Scenic Drives
1. Mykonos Town → Armenistis Lighthouse (north tip) — 7 km each way, dramatic coastal views, spectacular sunset.
2. Ano Mera → Fokos Beach (north) — 6 km of increasingly wild terrain, ending at an untouched bay.
3. Ornos → Agios Ioannis → Kapari (south-west) — short coastal loop past the famous "Shirley Valentine" beach.
4. East Coast Road: Kalafatis → Elia — panoramic ridge road with views across the south-east.
Fuel Stations
Mykonos has a limited number of petrol stations:
Note: Fuel stations may close early on Sundays and public holidays. Run the tank to at least a quarter before Sunday plans.
Roundabouts and Right of Way
Greece follows priority-to-the-right rules at unmarked intersections. The one major roundabout (near the airport) follows standard roundabout rules. When in doubt, slow down and give way.
