Beyond the beach clubs and the windmills, Mykonos has a quieter, more authentic side — ancient chapels, wild beaches, hilltop restaurants, and rocky coves that only locals visit. Most can only be reached by car.
11 Hidden Gems in Mykonos (That Most Tourists Miss)
Mykonos is famous for Paradise Beach, the windmills, and Little Venice. But the island holds dozens of quieter treasures that most tourists never find — because they never rent a car.
1. Fokos Beach
A wild, northward-facing bay with no facilities and no bus route. Crystal water, enormous smooth boulders, and complete silence. You need a Jeep or SUV to reach it on the unpaved track.
2. Armenistis Lighthouse
On the far northwest tip of the island, this 19th-century lighthouse offers the most dramatic sunset view on Mykonos. There is no paved road all the way — bring a capable vehicle.
3. Panagia Tourliani Monastery, Ano Mera
A strikingly ornate white monastery at the centre of Ano Mera village, founded in 1542. The interior features a remarkable iconostasis (altar screen) carved in Florence. Often empty of tourists even in high season.
4. Agia Anna Beach
A small cove near Kalafatis, accessed via a short dirt track. Tiny, almost always quiet, with turquoise water and no facilities — bring your own picnic.
5. The Windmill District at Dawn
Everyone photographs the Kato Myli windmills. But go at 7am and you will have them almost entirely to yourself, with soft morning light and a completely calm sea.
6. Panormos Beach (North Coast)
Tucked in a sheltered bay on the normally-wild north coast, Panormos has calm, shallow water even when the Meltemi is blowing. A bohemian beach bar and excellent fresh fish make it a complete day out.
7. Khora's Back Streets
The tourists crowd into three or four main shopping streets in Mykonos Town. The residential lanes behind them are empty, whitewashed, and occasionally home to tiny family-run tavernas with handwritten menus and no Instagram presence.
8. Agios Sostis Beach
Another wild north-coast gem — no sunbeds, no bar, just sand and serious waves for swimming. The access road is bumpy; an economy car will manage but an SUV is more comfortable.
9. Maou — The Hilltop Restaurant District
A scattering of high-end farm-to-table restaurants in the hills above Mykonos Town. The views are extraordinary, the drive is beautiful at night, and the menus are built around local produce and Aegean catch.
10. Delos by Ferry from the Old Port
Drive to the Old Port, park near the car park, and take the morning boat to the sacred island of Delos — a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most important archaeological sites in the entire Mediterranean. A full-day experience unlike anything else in the Cyclades.
11. The Road to Ftelia at Sunset
Drive the north coast road westward at golden hour and pull over anywhere you like. The light on the sea, the barren rocky hills, and the lack of traffic make this one of Mykonos's most beautiful — and most ignored — experiences.
